Puppy Proof Kitchen Design

One major issue with our current home is the lack of proper puppy-proofing. For those unfamiliar, puppy-proofing involves setting up barriers and precautions to keep a dog away from areas they shouldn’t access. Before we adopted our dog 2.5 years ago, we ensured the outside of our house was safe by securing any potential hazards or escape routes. However, we neglected to do the same inside, and it’s been challenging ever since. The kitchen has been the biggest problem. Our dog constantly tries to steal food from the counter or rummage through the bins. We even bought a baby gate to keep him out, but somehow, he’s learned to open it and sneaks into the kitchen in the middle of the night.

I’ve been in contact with someone that does custom kitchens, with the request that the kitchen is designed in a way to make it as hard as possible for my dog to get up to mischief. Apparently this isn’t the first time that they’ve had a brief like this, and it seems like a lot of people have extremely cheeky dogs.

When I inquired about the design, I had my own one in mind. I’m not sure how possible this would be, but I’d like the kitchen to be an open plan and when we’re not using it, the doors raise up from the floor and completely cover any access point for the dog. It seems like the designer will have quite a job ahead of them, but I assume they will be up to it. I’m very lucky at the standard of nearby kitchen designers. Melbourne designers are top class, and I have complete faith in them that they’ll produce a kitchen that is both functional and keeps my dog out. I expect that this whole process will be complete within the next few months, which is very exciting indeed. It probably won’t excite my dog though.
