Winter Posted on 1st June 2011

With the weather taking a sudden turn into winter, it can send an unsettling breeze through the comforting patterns of everyday life. It’s been so mild lately, that choosing what to wear has been a joy-just put on whatever you feel like, without thinking about how to keep your body warm. winter_tree_house

Then suddenly the chill came and I spent the first cold day in shock with freezing toes, chattering teeth and stiff bones. Not a happy place to be as I tried to remember what kept me warm last winter?

I do love the changes of the seasons. In fact, it’s what I love and celebrate most with the food we cook and eat. But with your wardrobe it can be a little confronting.

I have a friend that freaks out over winter footwear options. Hates the knee-high boot with jeans (for obvious reasons to anyone that spends time with school mums…no offence to myself or anyone else out there), trainers too young, ballet flat too cold. I think the flat(ish) lace up ankle boot like these from APC is definitely the answer (though I still adore wearing trainers & will forever). APC_workboots

Another friend went crazy and bought a super puffy puffa vest. She said she knows it isn’t the most flattering item in her wardrobe, but she’s worn it every day & is happy as Larry.

rittenhouse_deluxe_raglan_hoodie genki_hoodie For me, it’s the search for the perfect fleece top. Soft hoodies and windies that bring back memories of cosy winter days, Golden Breed and 70s surf & skate movies. I found a great hoodie here at Rittenhouse and my much loved Genki one.

My all-time favourite is the Genki windy with little puff sleeves. I don’t think I’m alone there, as I’ve received lots of emails from people asking us to make them again. apple_windy

The gents out there have also been talking about our simple raglan windy which is that perfect, no fuss vintage looking sweat. apc_green_sweat But which print to choose, that’s if we put a print on them at all (they are lovely plain too). And what colour? Remember we used to make that amazing"Dick Bruna" green? At that time we had to get it dyed up as no fabric company made the perfect green. I was so delighted to see a similar windy in APC’s current collection-being my favourite label it felt good to know we both have a penchant for classic sweats in green.

Here are some images to bring your minds back and some artwork that we used.

Ha! I'm totally rocking the stripey leggings, Hunter gumboots, puffer jacket and big sunnies look at school pick up time right now. I'm trying to convince myself that style doesn't matter when it's this cold OR people might think I got lost on the way home from Glastonbury OR how happy I am that we are a long way from Scopus Toto. xx

Kate — 25 May at 12:19PM

and a skirt or dress over the leggings. Leggings are never to be worn as pants I say. x

chanie — 25 May at 12:34PM

Yes yes, totally with you sister about leggings as pants. It is just plain wrong!
love your winter uniform-is it true that Hunter boots are the best thing ever? what colour? style always matters i reckon, especially when it's to your own rocking tune xx

Amy — 25 May at 01:20PM

Hi Chanie! I would love to have the puff sleeves windy with the 100% lady print in any vibrant colour like red or yellow :)

Emily Smith — 25 May at 01:23PM

OH!!!! excitement,EXCITEMENT! I am one of the people who have desperatrly been waiting on this good news! I think we def's need hoodies and windys galore for this winter. PLEEEEEEASE! YAY!!

Emily — 25 May at 01:26PM

Ooooops! I am also one that makes spelling mistakes in 'public posts'. (as above hehe) PS welcome to the 'ugg-boot clan I recently did the same-and cant say I regret it!

chanie — 25 May at 01:56PM

I think almost everyone makes spelling boo boos in public posts..know i do for sure! i am shocked at how much happiness my ugg boots have brought me and afraid that i have begun to put comfort before style. Still, swear with all my heart, will never ever wear crocs.
thanks for writing!

My vote for pink print 100% Lady on black background! One of the first tshirts I bought from Genki waaaaaaay back in the old days (I'm talking circa 2002 because I'm pretty sure I wore it to a NYE party in December 2002!) was the black cap sleeved 100% Lady C:

Farah — 25 May at 02:50PM

also second vote for green apple! Is it possible to bring back long & skinny? It was perfect for us gals with long (and not necessarily skinny) torsos!

chanie — 25 May at 03:10PM

Thank you Farah & Amy for your votes! 100% lady looks like she much loved. Please send me the photo from the NYE party!
Long & skinny was an excellent one-i just pulled out the sample and popped it on! x

Monika — 25 May at 04:05PM

Can I please have an exact one like Pony wore in the pic above but cut in the usual woman's windy shape with puff sleeves, please pretty pleeeassee Chanie?

Em — 25 May at 08:39PM

would love knee warmers but cant find them anywhere. love the Genki windy with puffy sleeves - how cute would it be with the cat image or the little hummingbird with flowers.

chanie — 26 May at 01:02PM

So good to know there are many folks out there who love the puffy sleeve windy. luckily we have archives of beautiful prints to choose from.
knee warmers or leg warmers? if you just want the knee, would you consider knitting them? i just started knitting and can't tell you how satisfying it is. i have a legwarmer pattern that i could send you, Em & then just make is smaller?
have a lovely thursday x

Nadia — 26 May at 06:46PM

Puff sleeve yes yes! Print - I like the bird in the trees but any genki print is a-ok with me. I honestly cannot think of anyone else that makes a nice fitted windy - most aren't cut to a very flattering shape for us ladies.

I also second Farah's vote for long and skinny - i remember it had a bunny on it! it was so awesome!

Jo — 29 May at 12:29PM

I'm still trying to find the right fleece jumper for winter, so at the moment I'm in the good old polar fleece. Ugh! Would love the windy in grey with pink 100% woman, same colour as my old 3/4 sleeve "I love footy" tee.

catherine — 05 June at 03:03PM

chanie your post inspired me to dig deep in one of my draws and retrieve my forgotten Genki bright green windcheater with the scoop neck and 3/4 length sleeves. was so lovely to rediscover it! this is boring, but my vote would be for a plain black, puff sleeve hoodie with zip and birdy embroidery to be brought back. long is good too!! x

chanie — 06 June at 01:47PM

so happy to hear you and green windy have had a reunion.you're not the only one wanting a new puff sleeve hoodie. ahh...i hate making decisions...
sorry haven't posted julian his prezzie..been a blurry few weeks. will do soon.

catherine — 06 June at 05:28PM

don't be silly chanie!! love to you and your family and hope you're keeping warm in this weather even without a new puff sleeve hoodie ;-)

melinda — 24 June at 07:48AM

Hi Chanie

I would love to wear a puff sleeve windy, in the brown with green apple design. I kicked myself for never getting one when they were around and have never forgotten it.

have a nice day

love melinda
